Gift exchanges

A calmer Secret Santa, from invitation to opening day

By Nearstead · October 12, 2026

A good exchange starts with shared expectations. Decide the small things early so the surprise can stay fun.

Agree on the shape of the exchange

Choose an organizer, an opening date and a spending ceiling before collecting names. Say whether the budget includes wrapping and shipping. A USD 30 gift with USD 20 postage feels different from a USD 30 local purchase. Make participation optional and give people a clear date to respond.

Collect preferences without removing the surprise

Ask each person for a few interests, useful sizes where relevant, and things they would prefer not to receive. Offer a “surprise me within these interests” option. A wishlist should give the giver direction, not an obligation to buy one exact item. Agree whether handmade gifts and secondhand finds are welcome.

Set exclusions before the draw

Decide whether partners or members of the same household may draw each other. Check the resulting group before drawing: if more than half the participants belong to one excluded household, there cannot be enough recipients outside it for every giver. Resolve that imbalance by changing the rule or the group, rather than repeatedly drawing names.

Keep the finish simple

After the draw, privately tell each giver their recipient. Set a shipping deadline and a backup plan for someone who cannot attend. Ask the organizer for help if a participant withdraws; do not silently swap names and leave another person without a gift.
